August 1997: tour through southwest Norway
After crossing the Skagerak by ferry from Hirtshals/Denmark
to Kristiansand/Norway, we started our roundtrip through the
southwest of Norway. Over Mandal, Lindesnes, Flekkefjord,
Egersund we reached the camping site "Oelstrand" directly
at the coast shortly before Stavanger. The pure sand beach
and the warm weather was exactly right for a lazy sunbath,
however the North Sea was a bit too cold to swim in.
At the next day, Stavanger was only 30 minutes to drive,
and we were quite lucky to see many old sailships in the harbour.
From Stavanger there's a ferry to Tau, then the "Prekestolen"
("The Pulpit") is not far away. It's a vertical rock raising 600m high
over the water of the fjord. After a nearly 2 hours walk through
nice landscape ....
.. you reach the platform of the rock, ...
.. where you can go to the border of the cliff and look
600meters deep if you are courageous. Anyway, the view
is amazing from here. And you won't belive how clear the
air and the water is here!
Two days later, we reached the Folgefonn Glacier area.
After a 4 hours walk from sea level to 1600m altitude
we had a beautiful view on the Buarbreen Glacier.
Bergen is a nice city you will mostly find in rain and clouds,
but we were very lucky and had a nice, warm sunny day. So
we took the chance and went up to the Floyen hill, where
you have a wonderful view on the harbour and the North Sea.
Bergen was a famous trade city in the medieval age,
Germans built up a profitable business center at the wharf.
The Fjaerlandsfjord, a side arm of the Sognefjord,
was the northern point of our roundtrip. This is also
a Glacier area, and you shouldn't miss a walk to the 1000m
high Flatbreen Glacier area.
In Norway you will find a very special kind of churches:
The Stavkirke which is built like a viking's ship.
